In November 2013, 22-year-old Taran Matharu started writing his debut novel, Summoner: The Novice, during National Novel Writing Month. He began to publish his work on story-sharing website, Wattpad – which has over 35 million subscribers, and 75 million stories – eventually updating his profile daily to keep up with the rising demand for new chapters. Matharu, after the book’s online success, submitted it to 6 agents for consideration; within 24 hours all had responded to say they wanted to represent him.
Now, little over a year later, Summoner has accumulated over 5 and a half million reads online; has been bought in 11 countries, including six-figure deals in the US and Brazil, with auctions still ongoing; and amassed a hoard of fans across the globe – many of whom have penned their own fan-fiction inspired by the, as yet unpublished, book. Matharu’s popularity in America and Canada resulted in Wattpad funding a rare trip for the author to meet fans in Toronto, an interview on NBC News, and the organisation of the first ever Wattpad Convention in London for the UK fan base.
Juliet Mushens, Matharu’s agent, who discovered the bestselling literary debut of 2014, The Miniaturist, said: “The opportunity to work with an author as innovative and creative as Taran is a rare and extremely exciting one: from the moment I started reading Summoner, I was addicted, and I understood why Taran was an online sensation. This is, I believe, one of the most exciting debuts of 2015.”
About the Book
Matharu’s epic fantasy follows a humble young blacksmith named Fletcher, who can summon demons from another world. Chased from his village for a crime he did not commit, he travels with his demon, Ignatius, to the Vocans Academy, where the gifted are trained in the art of summoning. At the academy, while training to fight in the Hominum Empire’s brutal orc war, Fletcher experiences the stark reality of class and race divisions, but also learns the importance of friendship and loyalty.
